What is Meshtastic, and do I need a SIM or cellular signal?
Meshtastic is open-source, off-grid text messaging over long-range LoRa radio. No SIM card, no cellular signal, no monthly fees — devices relay messages for each other across many kilometres, which suits rural areas like the Overberg.
How much does it cost to join?
Nothing. Joining the mesh and using the MeshInfo and MeshView dashboards is free. You only need a Meshtastic-compatible LoRa device — a one-off hardware cost of a few hundred rand.
